There are thousands of softwares out there on the whole wide web, some are paid while others are free. I’ve put up a list of 10 freewares that act as magnificent alternatives to the big boys. These are small, fast, efficient and do the job for you. Here goes the list:
1. Mozilla Firefox: It should be the unanimous choice now for everyone to use Firefox. It took some years for it to sink in that Firefox has always been better than Internet Explorer which ruled the browser world for the past decade. Well, now it is time for a change.
Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured Web browser. Firefox includes pop-up blocking; tab-browsing; integrated Google search; simplified privacy controls; a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser; and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online. 2. CCleaner: I didn’t have this freeware a year back. At that time my PC was cluttered up, bogged down and had various other problems. All the result of me not keeping the PC clean. This simple freeware cleans up all your system for junk data, invalid registries, all browsing history and much more.
CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. [http://www.ccleaner.com]
3. AVG - Antivirus Free: Granted that there is a professional version to this Antivirus. But you wouldn’t find a much better free one than this. I used Norton Antivirus a few years back and after the subscription period was over, vowed never to go for it again. I looked for a free one for the time being so that I could look around for a good one. I found this and since then I haven’t had a reason to opt for a change.
AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. [http://free.grisoft.com]
4. KLite Media Codec Pack: I’m never too interested in having more than one media player or audio player, so I used the default Windows Media Player to play everything, well almost. I found out that the WMP did not play AVI files and other DVDs, so someone recommended KLite Media Codec Pack and its been a real treasure. It plays almost all the files I’ve thrown at it, even FLV files and it has a simple player which doesn’t use up much of the resources.
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a collection of codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. [http://www.codecguide.com]
5. Pidgin: This is a useful IM open source utility. I came across this when I installed Ubuntu on my system. Before I came across this, I had to open up quite a few messengers to access friends in different accounts. But this one utility allowed me to access friends from Yahoo, MSN, Gmail, AIM and even IRC.
Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once. [http://www.pidgin.im]
6. Mozilla Thunderbird: Another great freeware from Mozilla. This allows you to check mail from your various email clients. I wasn’t much of a fan until recently and have been using it for a couple of months. It was getting pretty tiring to keep opening all the mail accounts to check the mail. It is faster now.
Thunderbird makes e-mailing safer, faster, and easier with such features as intelligent spam filters, a built-in RSS reader, and quick search. [http://www.mozilla.com]
7. Spybot Search & Destroy: You have an antivirus and now you need an antispyware. Here is Spybot Search & Destroy for you. Cleans up all suspicious cookies, adware and spyware. Not much for the eyes, but does its job anyway.
Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. Spybot also can clean program and Web-usage tracks from your system, which is especially useful if you share your computer. [http://www.safer-networking.org]
8. Irfanview: Irfanview is a simple image viewer which does the job magnificently. I hated the Windows Picture Viewer on sight, looked for an alternative and found this.
IrfanView is a fast and compact image viewer/converter. It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals. Many supported file formats and features. [http://www.irfanview.com]
9. GIMP: This is a free open-source image editor which does powerful jobs with pictures. Also called as the poor man’s photoshop, but does most of the work that Photoshop can do.
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. [http://www.gimp.org]
10. uTorrent: A simple and powerful P2P sharing utility. Doesn’t use up much of the system resources and does the job efficiently.
uTorrent is a powerful and efficient BitTorrent client for Windows. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in uTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading, and Mainline DHT. [http://www.utorrent.com]
So that concludes the list, but there are more out there, some that I may not know of. If you too have found better alternatives then let me know too. But for those of you who are still searching for the right choice, you needn’t go further.
